It marks the end of an era in the Xiaomi ecosystem, as after more than a decade of continuous development, Xiaomi has officially stopped updates for MIUI.

With this move, Xiaomi closes an important chapter that began long before the company even made its first smartphone.

With final support ending for the last active devices, the MIUI now fully gives its place to HyperOS, Xiaomi's new unified operating system for the future.

Devices reaching end of support

The latest devices to receive MIUI updates were the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2+These models continued to receive security patches and minor updates until the end of 2025, with their final firmware being released in December.

From the March 24 2026, both devices have officially reached end-of-life support, meaning no further updates of any kind will be released. This officially marks the full end of MIUI as an actively maintained system.

The MIUI journey begins (2010)

The MIUI was first presented on August of 2010, even before Xiaomi released its first smartphone. Built in Android 2.2, started as a custom ROM that was distributed to a small group of early users.

At the time, development was extremely limited, handled by just three engineers who focused mainly on core apps like messaging, contacts, and the dialer. Despite its simplicity, it laid the foundation for Xiaomi's future ecosystem.

Rapid evolution and feature expansion (2010–2013)

With the MIUI 2 Arriving a few months later, Xiaomi quickly expanded the system apps and introduced early signature features such as T9 dialing and improved file management.

Until the moment it was released MIUI 3 in 2011, customization became the main focus, introducing themes and customizable lock screens supported by Xiaomi's frameworks.

The MIUI 4 in 2012 marked a major turning point, as Xiaomi began to integrate Internet services such as cloud storage, an app store, and media platforms, pushing the system beyond a simple user interface skin.

The MIUI 5 in 2013 It improved the design language and introduced many groundbreaking features, including advanced privacy controls and system optimizations that were ahead of stock Android at the time.

Design Revolution and Global Development (2014–2017)

The MIUI 6, which released the 2014 brought a completely new minimalist design, which aligns with global user interface trends and significantly improves the user experience.

The 2015, MIUI 7 added personalization features, such as themed versions, a kids mode, and improved data transfer tools, making the system more family-friendly.

The MIUI 8 in 2016 pushed the visual redesign even further, adding new animations, a custom system font, and features like dual apps and advanced photo editing.

Until 2017, the MIUI 9 focused on performance and efficiency, introducing smart assistants, faster app launches and improved system responsiveness, while the global user base continued to grow rapidly.

AI integration and the full-screen era (2018–2020)

The MIUI 10 embraced the era of full-screen smartphones, optimizing gestures, system animations, and incorporating features that are based on AI, such as smart preloading for faster performance.

The MIUI 11 in 2019 improved visual simplicity and introduced productivity tools such as wireless printing, file sharing, and an always-on display, along with early AI-powered features.

The 2020, the MIUI 12 It represented one of the biggest upgrades in Xiaomi's history, bringing advanced animations, improved privacy controls, and features like floating windows and super wallpapers, marking the pinnacle of design innovation.

Ecosystem Maturity, Optimization and Expansion (2021–2022)

The MIUI 13, which released him December of 2021, largely focused on system stability and performance improvements. Xiaomi introduced deeper optimizations to core technologies, greatly improving the smoothness of both system and third-party applications. It also expanded cross-device connectivity, enabling better interaction between phones, tablets, and smart home devices, strengthening Xiaomi's ecosystem strategy.

The MIUI 14, which released him December of 2022, further refined this approach by improving system efficiency and reducing bloat. It introduced the Photon Engine for better performance and improved privacy processing on the device. The system also reinforced Xiaomi's vision for a "human-centric" ecosystem, connecting multiple devices seamlessly.

The Transition to HyperOS

In October of 2023, Xiaomi officially unveiled the HyperOS as his successor MIUIDesigned to unify smartphones, cars and smart home devices, HyperOS represents a shift towards a fully integrated ecosystem. Since its launch, millions of devices have been gradually upgraded, while older models have been phased out of support.

A legacy that shaped Xiaomi

From a small custom ROM to one of the most widely used Android-based systems worldwide, MIUI has played a pivotal role in Xiaomi's rise. It introduced innovations ahead of its time, built a loyal global community, and helped define Xiaomi's identity as a software-driven technology brand.

As Xiaomi moves forward with the HyperOS, the MIUI remains a key part of its history — one that transformed not only Xiaomi devices, but the broader Android experience.
