The past year proved to be very good, in terms of sales. Huawei, Xiaomi and the Vivo in China

China's smartphone market is the largest in the world, and while things weren't as easy in 2024 as in previous years, the country's smartphone market managed to achieve a 1,5% increase on an annual basis, according to the latest report of Counterpoint Research.

Last year was a roller coaster ride in terms of the extreme swings the market experienced throughout 2024, and that applies to all product categories, not just smartphone sales. Smartphone sales started and ended on a weak note, but somewhere in between 5th and 3rd week, demand in China increased compared to 2023.

The companies' performance did not follow the same dynamics, however, the Huawei was the biggest winner in this race, scoring impressive increase in sales by 36% year after year, mainly thanks to its high-end series Mate which is powered by the Kirin SoC the company's.

Η Xiaomi was not far behind, scoring a steady jump in sales by 10%, mainly thanks to the strong sales of its Smartphone series Xiaomi 14 and Redmi, proving once again that competitive pricing can work wonders.

Η Vivo also had a good run in the China market with increase 6%, maintaining its momentum in both the mid-range and premium smartphone categories.

But some others were not so lucky. The Apple found himself in a difficult position, with sales to decline by 13%, as Huawei's premium devices stole the spotlight and consumer interest.

Neither Oppo escaped, noting the drop of 9%, as the competition in the market for 2024 proved to be very strong. Even the Honor, despite expanding its product line, noted moderate fall, according to the report.

Things could get a lot more interesting for 2025 after the Chinese government's decision to boost consumer spending through subsidies on electronics – including smartphones.

This intervention could provide a very big boost to the market for 2025, however, the international economic pressures that exist today do not bode well, and this looming economic uncertainty means that the long-term outlook remains precarious.

For the Huawei, Xiaomi and the Vivo, the challenge will be to maintain their momentum for 2025, while on the other hand, the Apple and Oppo They will need to quickly find solutions that will lead them to recovery, but this will not be easy at all.
