A Xiaomi SU7 suddenly started moving on its own from its parking spot, causing panic in its owner
Xiaomi is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the autonomous driving system of its electric cars, as it recently had to issue a recall order after a specialized scenario that was not tested in the ADAS of the company, and may have led to the fatal accident that occurred a few months ago in China, involving one of its vehicles.

Xiaomi reacted quickly to the new incident and launched a full investigation, after an SU7 owner complained that his car suddenly left the parking space in front of his apartment on its own. The Xiaomi SU7 owner insisted that there was no input from his side to make the vehicle move, and there was no driver in the car when it started to do so.
Video footage released by the car's owner showed the car parked outside his apartment when the incident occurred, and he and a woman were inside. After the car suddenly started moving on its own and drove away, the woman screamed and he hurriedly chased after it.
The owner told the reporter that after the incident, he immediately contacted customer service. Xiaomi Car, and they told him over the phone that they may have accidentally touched a Smartphone, causing the vehicle to start. However, the car owner disagreed with this explanation and released the video of the incident, saying that he was not handling a Smartphone when the car started moving.
Xiaomi did not deny that the electric sedan started moving autonomously, but after reviewing the logs, it explained to the owner that the movement was triggered by a command issued by a iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The owner was initially skeptical about the explanation and demanded that Xiaomi release the logs.

After a detailed review of the logs together with Xiaomi, it turned out that the company was right. A iPhone 15 Pro Max that was linked to the owner's Xiaomi account had sent a remote parking command. Xiaomi's driver assistance software offers an option very similar to the function Tesla Smart Summon that parks the EV autonomously or "calls" it out of its parking space.
It is precisely this command that was somehow accidentally sent by the iPhone by pressing or touching it, and forced the Xiaomi SU7 to start maneuvering and moving away from the spot where it was parked on its own, causing a rather creepy experience for the owner, as seen in the video below.
An initial mistake by a customer service representative contributed to the confusion as to what happened, according to Xiaomi:
The vehicle support data shows that during the time window described by the user, the vehicle received a parking assist command from the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which activated the parking assist function (activation requires the vehicle to be within close proximity of the phone's Bluetooth connection) and the vehicle began to pull away.
When contacted with online customer service regarding the user's comments, they stated that the parking assist command came from a iPhone 16We verified that our online customer service representative messed up the device model ID (iPhone 16,2) with the corresponding device model (iPhone 15 Pro Max) when communicating with the user, leading to misunderstanding and miscommunication. We apologize for this and will continue to improve our service efforts.., Xiaomi said.
However, the fact that he was apparently unaware that such a command was sent from the iPhone has started a debate about the need for stronger safeguards against the unintentional use of Xiaomi's driver assistance system, without anyone present in the vehicle.
