The foldable smartphone market is evolving rapidly and Xiaomi seems ready to make a significant shift in its strategy.
According to the latest information, the company has decided to abandon the development of MIX Flip 3, now focusing on a new, more ambitious project: the Xiaomi 18 Fold.
Why is the MIX Flip 3 being cancelled?
The decision to cancel the MIX Flip 3 is surprising, as the device was already in an advanced stage of development. Codenamed “pixie" and possible equipment with a powerful next-generation processor, the model had all the prerequisites to be a strong proposition in the compact foldables category.
However, the flip smartphone market has become highly competitive, with many companies offering similar solutions. This seems to have led Xiaomi to reevaluate its priorities and direct its resources to more profitable projects.
It's worth noting that this isn't the first time the company has canceled an almost-ready device, showing that it prioritizes strategy over just consistency of releases.
New direction: Xiaomi 18 Fold is coming
With the cancellation of MIX Flip 3, the interest is transferred to Xiaomi 18 Fold, a new large-screen foldable (book style).
The device, codenamed “Lhasa”, is expected to debut later this year and will be equipped with a new chipset, likely designed for high performance and an optimized user experience.
This choice shows that Xiaomi wants to invest in premium foldables, where it can better showcase its technological innovations, such as:
- advanced hinges (folding mechanisms)
- larger and more efficient screens
- improved camera systems
- custom chipsets and hardware
Limited availability
Another important element is that most of Xiaomi's foldables remain exclusively available for the Chinese market.
Examples such as MIX Fold and MIX Flip show that the company has not yet dynamically expanded this series globally. The same is expected to happen with the Xiaomi 18 Fold, which may disappoint fans outside of Asia.
What does this change mean for the market?
Xiaomi's new strategy reflects a broader trend:
- Compact flip phones are saturated
- Large foldables offer greater scope for innovation
- Companies are investing more in premium categories
Xiaomi seems to be aiming for a stronger presence in high-end segment, competing with type devices Galaxy z foldThe cancellation of MIX Flip 3 it's not just a change of plan — it's an indication of a broader strategic shift.
Xiaomi is abandoning small foldables to focus on more sophisticated and technologically demanding devices, with the Xiaomi 18 Fold to be her next big bet.
If this move works, we may see Xiaomi establish itself even more dynamically in the premium category of foldable smartphones.
