The HyperOS 3 upgrade blocks some Xiaomi devices with “tampered” Custom Global ROMs: Recovery instructions

guide-logo

A new update on HyperOS 3 by Xiaomi, is reportedly blocking certain devices, especially imported Xiaomi smartphones, which while intended for the Chinese market, are reportedly running Unofficial (Custom) Global ROMs

The recent one update to HyperOS 3 based mainly on Android 16, has left some Xiaomi models to be stuck in bootloop or in Recovery mode.

Why does HyperOS 3 block some phones?

Some Xiaomi phones, especially those imported from China and sold through unofficial channels in other markets, are experiencing boot issues after updating to HyperOS 3.

These Chinese smartphones were released not through official channels in markets other than China, with “Tampered” Global ROMsThe new update in HyperOS 3 introduces a area lock control, which compares the phone's hardware to the software region. Therefore, if the software running on the device does not match the intended country for which it is intended, then the operating system fails to boot smoothly and traps the device in recovery mode or in continuous bootloops instead of loading the operating system normally.

Xiaomi considers the illegal unauthorized software installations on devices intended for other markets, so the company does not classify this particular problem as a "bug".

How to fix your stuck device after update

If you have already installed the update to HyperOS 3 and your device is stuck on Bootloop or in Recovery, there is a known solution that can enable automatic restore in HyperOS 2.2 (in the previous official version):

  • Forced reboot repeatedly: Continue to force restart your device for about 10-15 times in a rowThis repeated reboot sequence is key, because it prompts the system to emergency reset function, which restores the previous HyperOS version that you had before upgrading to HyperOS 3, even if it is not genuine (Custom ROM). Once this reset is complete, your phone should boot up normally again.
  • Disable updates after recovery: After your device successfully reboots into HyperOS 2.2, disable automatic updates in Settings to prevent the phone from attempting to upgrade to HyperOS 3 again.

This problem has been officially documented in Xiaomi's weekly BUG Report Vol.231, in which you can read more from HERE.
