AMD embraces artificial intelligence with its newest notebook processors. The company launched the series today Ryzen 8040, which is designed to run local genetic AI programs on consumer PCs.

The line Ryzen 8040, codenamed “Hawk Point”, still uses the architecture Zen 4 that we saw in the mobile processor series Ryzen 7040, which was first introduced in January. Both processor families feature similar clock speeds.

The difference is the processing devoted to AI programs. AMD has found a way to squeeze even more performance out of the AI engine xDNA which is built into the processor.

This means that the series 8040 can offer up to 40% increase in performances compared to processors in the series 7040 during its execution AI chatbot Llama 2 and other image recognition models, such as ResNet 50 and Inception V4. In particular, the 8040's AI-centric processing can reach the 39 Tera Operations per Second, of 33 TOPS in the 7040 family.

The company also tested the 8040 series against processors “raptor lake” 13th generation Intel for laptops. Benchmarks show that AMD's silicon can perform better, especially in games and benchmarks Cinebench and Geekbench, thanks in part to the built-in GPU Radeon.

However, benchmarks only give us a snapshot of their performance, leaving out other details. For example, AMD avoided comparing the 8040 series with its own 7040 chips for general computing or AI imaging. Meanwhile, competitor Intel is preparing to release its own processors Meteor Lake with AI which will be succeeded by the 13th generation chips this month. Therefore, we should test the 8040 series to get a better idea of their performance.

Meanwhile, users can expect that the series Ryzen 8040 will start arriving on consumer laptops in the first quarter of the year. The company will release nine chips across the family 8040 and all will feature the exclusive AI engine xDNA, except for the two lower-end Ryzen 3 processors.

Η Acer is already preparing to adopt the chips for the laptop gaming Nitro V 16, which is set to be released in March starting from $999.99. The PC with Windows 11 it will feature a 16-inch display with a refresh rate 165 Hz, dual cooling fan system and space for a mobile GPU of the series Nvidia RTX 4000.

During a press conference, AMD also revealed the “Strix Point“, another class of Ryzen chips expected to arrive sometime next year. These chips will feature even more powerful AI processing through a new engine XDNA 2, which "it will open the door to greater use of genetic AI on your computer,” says AMD's director of marketing Donny Woligroski. This will equate to a 3x performance increase for generative AI programs, the company claims.
